Of Guts and Grace

Of Guts and GraceExcerpt from the Prologue: Jim Miles sat motionless on the crude bench; his intense brown eyes missing nothing. On tour in Colombia, South America, with other lay Christians like himself, he awaited the onset of worship. They had told him this ramshackle building was a church, a makeshift village sanctuary where Colombians found God. Jim was a new believer, having just accepted Jesus as Lord only a few weeks before. A small boy wriggled onto the rickety bench beside Jim and fastened his gaze on the foreigner who had invaded his world. "His eyes looked through me, searching for some sign of my love for him," Jim remembers. "I couldn't restrain my right arm. It reached across his soulders and drew him closer." The well-groomed business man from Indiana immediately caught sight of his new friend's untied, dangling shoestring and rached down to tie it for him. "But the strain I put on it was too much. It snapped, leaving a piece in my hand," Jim says. "The boy was heartbroken. He shunned my every attempt to tie the string together." Jim felt he'd blown his opportunity to make a new friend and perhaps share his faith with him. After all, that is why he had come. As Jim gazed down at his own shoes, sturdy brown oxfords bought for the trip, the solution hit him. "My new laces came out of my shoes, and I put them into the eyelets of the boy's shoes. Then I put his old knotted strings into my shoes. My feet felt strangely secure. And the boy's spontaneous smile of gratitude gave me a clue about the reason why the missionaries were down here in the first place."

Understanding Haitian VooDoo

God Owns My Business
Part textbook, part life-story, part theological exposé, Understanding Haitian Voodoo comes from a much-respected Haitian gentleman who writes as a lawyer, judge, and evangelist who cares deeply about his people and their bondage in Voodoo.
“Voodoo is not simply a myth, toward which we can remain indifferent. It is not just popular culture that we should teach and practice in schools through dances and songs. The gods of Voodoo are not simply idols or harmless gods. They are real beings, intelligent beings, they lust after worship and are full of cruelty.” With testimonies from Voodoo priests, followers, witch doctors and more, Understanding Haitian Voodoo is a deep observation of Haitian Voodoo through the eyes of Christian faith, molded in Haitian theology that is biblical, contemporary, relevant and transformational.
From his identity as a Christian believer and as a Haitian, proud of his culture, traditions, language and customs, author Emmanuel Félix brings a remarkable contribution to a better understanding of the relationship of Voodoo to Haitian culture, to Christianity, to zombies, community life, religions and beliefs, identity and more. The final conclusion of this majestic work confirms all that man seeks is found in the Almighty God Jehovah, through Jesus Christ, and in Him alone, no matter a man’s race, culture and beliefs. Whether you’re planning to visit Haiti, seeking to pray more intelligently for the work of the Gospel or are simply looking to learn more about the Haitian people, this book is a must-read. Read this
book prayerfully, with a Bible at your side and an eye on the realities of life in Haiti.
